OVERVIEW
The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) needed a modernized, user-focused platform/website that could serve multiple audiences: researchers and data analysts, marketers, and internal stakeholders. My role extended beyond interface design to creating tools and workflows that empowered marketing managers, content teams, and administrators to independently manage their digital ecosystem.

CHALLENGE
IHTA faced several key challenges:
Outdated digital infrastructure that required developer intervention for even minor updates.
No streamlined way for marketing managers to submit or organize event activations.
Data and content was critical to make available to the site but the current web site was difficult for content managers to use.

APPROACH
I collaborated closely with developers, stakeholders, and content managers to design solutions that respected both visitor usability and staff workflows over a 2-year period that included Phase 1 and Phase 2 developments:
Event Submission & Selection Tool: Partnered with the backend developer to architect a system where marketing managers from all offices world-wide could easily submit events/activations. Visitors could browse, select multiple events of interest, and export them into Excel for personal records or email organizers directly.
Visitor Impact Data: Redesigned the way daily visitor statistics were displayed. Customized the CMS so that HTA staff could update data daily without changing their established workflow, ensuring both accuracy and consistency.
Design System & Pattern Library: Created modular design patterns and component libraries, empowering content managers to build and update pages independently—eliminating bottlenecks and enabling faster rollouts.
Information Architecture: Reorganized site content to make tourism data more accessible and culturally grounded, while structuring backend workflows to be intuitive for staff.

SOLUTION
The final platform was not just a tourism website, but a multi-tool ecosystem:
For Data Analysts/Researchers and Marketers: A streamlined event discovery tool and personalized export functions and accessible information.
For HTA Staff: A streamlined event discovery tool integrated into their daily workflow that allowed for the uploading of activations/events.
For Content Managers: A scalable design library for rapid, consistent page creation.

OUTCOME
Operational Efficiency: Content and marketing teams reduced reliance on developers, enabling faster updates and ccommunication.
Enhanced Engagement: Marketers and Researches gained access to information, resources and tools.
Streamlined Reporting: Daily visitor data was presented clearly and updated seamlessly, improving transparency for stakeholders.
Sustainability: The design system laid a foundation for scalable growth, ensuring HTA’s digital presence could evolve without constant redesign.

Front-facing views of Partnership Opportunities that a prospective marketer could register for. This was a separate database that HTA offices from around the world could submit offerings to where a moderator would be notified, then able to review and enter an edit and approval process with that officer before posting it to the website. This solution streamlined workflow by keeping the www admin access limited while still allowing for HTA staff to participate and manage their event offerings as a distributed team.
